Don Pedro with his soldiers, triumphant from a recent war, arrives in the idyllic town of Messina. But in the home of Leonato, Messina's governor, the "merry wars" of love have just begun. Young Claudio falls immediately for the lovely Hero and the fiercely independent Beatrice and Benedick exchange first jibes, then oaths, in one of Shakespeare's most beloved comedies. Lies and spies, quips and kisses make Much Ado About Nothing a witty, delightful romp through the travails of love.

The unique double-casting of Lantern Theater's production explores the lighter and darker sides of love. Each hero plays his foil, as we see the same actors play Don Pedro and Don John, Benedick and Boracchio, and Claudio and Conrade, to highlight how love can turn to jealousy and joy can turn to paranoia.

Charles McMahon, founder and Artistic Director of the Lantern Theater Company, directs Much Ado About Nothing. He was nominated for a 2004 Barrymore Award for his direction of The Comedy of Errors, which won two awards for Best Ensemble and Best Choreography/Movement. Other Lantern directing credits include The Tempest, King Lear, The House of Bernarda Alba, Beyond Therapy, and A Doll's House. As an actor he has appeared this season in the Lantern Theater's production of Un-American as well as Copenhagen (Heisenberg), Travels with My Aunt (Ensemble), Waiting for Godot (Lucky), Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (Guildenstern), King Lear (Edmund) and Noonday Demons and Other Distractions (Delmas/George). A graduate of NYU's theater department where he studied acting and directing, he has also toured with the National Shakespeare Company's productions of Hamlet and She Stoops to Conquer.

The cast includes Barrymore Award-winners Frank X and Joe Guzman, as well as 2004 Barrymore nominee Karen Vicks. Other cast members include H. Michael Walls, Dave Jadico, Brendon Gawel, Rainey Lacey and Marla Burkholder. The design team includes Barrymore nominees Nick Embree, Millie Hiibel and Nick Rye.

On Sunday, April 24 the Lantern is hosting a symposium, "The Mirror Up to Nature: Duality in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing" in conjunction with the production. Join Lois Potter, Ph.D. Professor of English at the University of Delaware, and Lantern Theater Artistic Director Charles McMahon for a lively discussion on the complexities of the Bard's comedic characters. The symposium begins at 4:30 and is free for patrons of the 2:00 pm matinee. All others are asked for a donation.
