Media Theatre Announces Delco Idol Competition

For Immediate Release: May 16, 2005
Media Contact: Roger Ricker, The Media Theatre, 610.891.0100

Delaware County is looking for a rising star, so your dreams may come true this summer. The Media Theatre is searching for new talent, and in a big way. Beginning this July, a five-week competition will begin on Delaware County's only professional stage. The Media Theatre Presents Delco Idol will be open to contestants ages 14-21, culminating in a winner being named the Delco Idol and receiving $1,000 to further their career.

Artistic Director Jesse Cline said, "This is a terrific opportunity for young talent in Delaware County to shine. The winner will be considered for a role in one of our Broadway productions."

The Media Theatre Presents Delco Idol will hold auditions at the theatre (104 East State Street) on Sunday, June 5 between 4:00 and 8:00. All who wish to audition must pay a registration fee of $15 and fill out a registration form (which are available either at the theatre or online at www.mediatheatre.org). Cline says, "This particular singing competition is open to pop songs, classics, or music theatre numbers." Following the auditions, 25 contestants will be selected to begin the singing competition for the judges and the general public on Wednesday evening, July 13 at 6pm.

Each Wednesday (through August 3), 5 contestants will be given constructive criticism and kindly asked to 'stay home next week, or come to watch the rest of the competition'. They will be rated by a panel of 7 judges on categories such as song choice, vocal ability, presentation, and interpretation. The final week, August 10, five contestants will remain and the winner will be chosen.

Each week, the competition is open to the general public at a ticket price of $10 for all ages. The final round is $15.

"Delco Idol is an exciting way to find new talent," Cline explains. "It's also fun for family members and friends to come out to cheer on their favorite contestant. The Media Theatre is so important to the Delaware County region and now, with this competition, Delaware County becomes even more valuable to the theatre. Even those who don't win will have the chance to sing their heart out for an audience, and you never know who is watching."
