Rocky Horror at The Academy Theatre

For Immediate Release: September 27, 2005
Media Contact: Bryan S. Clark, The Academy Theatre, 609.291.9000

Returning to The Academy Theatre stage this year is the phenomenon that is Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show. After a huge response and by popular demand, it is back and this time it is better than ever!

The Rocky Horror Show is a musical/comedy with a twisted edge to it. The production began in London in a small theatre and after becoming a huge success, eventually moved to the big screen. After a poor initial run, the film came back some years later to become the archetypal "midnight movie" for nearly two decades.

The show, and the movie for that matter, begins out innocently enough - a couple, Brad and Janet, get engaged at a friend's wedding and get a flat tire in the middle of the night while it's raining. Later they just happen to find a castle and decide to try to use their phone (castles are known for their telephone service after all). Little do they know that the castle is owned by Dr. Frank N. Furter, a mad transsexual transvestite scientist who has recently created a creature that he intends to use for very personal reasons. As the night progresses, the couple get over the initial shock of Dr. Frank and his band of strange servants and start loosening up. That is when the real fun begins...

The Rocky Horror Show features some of the areas most talented performers. Taking on the pivotal role of Dr. Frank N. Furter is G. Starr, who although not originally from Philadelphia, calls this home for now. G. Starr is a founding member of Backseat Productions who have called Boston, New York and Guatemala home at one point or another. G. Starr just finished starring in Hung on a Blonde Ponytail, a musical creation he helped write and produce, for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. The album, by the same name, is due to release in October under Curve Dominant Sound. Recently G. Starr played Pink in The Wall in front of 5000 attendees for the Prescot Arts Festival in Conneceticut, and has directed Angels in America for Philadelphian audiences this past summer/spring.

New to the show this year as Janet is Bre Cade, who at 18 years old has established a repertoire as an actor that would make many jealous. She has been seen regionally in The Wiz, Into the Woods, Rumors, Looking Glass Land, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and The Mystery of Edwin Drood to name a few. If that weren't enough she was the featured performer with the Point Pleasant Borough Show Choir on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line.

Also new to the show this year is Anthony D'Amato who plays the two-part role of Eddie/Dr.Scott. Anthony D'Amato is a professional soul rock/R&B vocalist that has performed throughout the tri-state area in theatre, television, music, and nationwide as a master of ceremonies. His solo cabarets have sold out NYC venues such as Rose's Turn and Don't Tell Mama, and made his off-Broadway debut in 2002 with Rock & Roll Fantasy, a 21-song solo classic rock show at the Triad Theatre. Select regional theatre credits include Blood Brothers (George Street Playhouse), Jesus Christ Superstar, The Wiz, Grease!, Corpus Christi, Assassins, Sweeney Todd (2005 NJACT Best Musical), Little Shop of Horrors, Meshuggah-Nuns, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, Jekyll & Hyde, Titanic, and was a 2001 Papermill Playhouse Rising Star Award nominee as the Headwaiter in She Loves Me. Anthony is now recording original pop music and represents Screaming Cat Studios in Asbury Park, and is a rock/pop/R&B vocal coach to many professional and upcoming singers throughout the state. His upcoming cabaret, My Melancholy Blues, will debut on December 11th in NJ, and bring Anthony back to NYC in January.

The Rocky Horror Show's opening night (October 7) will offer an opportunity to meet and speak with all the performers and the producers of the show. This event will also include special offers on the rest of the season, invitations for local media groups and organizations, and free concessions after the show.

The Rocky Horror Show has, at this time, a limited run of only 13 performances. The show runs from October 7 to November 5th, 2005. Performances thru October 15 are on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, after which they are Fridays at 8pm and Saturdays at 7pm and 11pm. Tickets may be reserved by calling the Box Office at 609-291-9000. To see a seating chart or for more information on The Academy, check our website at www.theacademytheatre.com.
