For the Love of Pig Iron 2006: Bay of Pigs! A Mildly Offensive, Partly Communist, Tropical-Feverish Cabaret Fundraiser at the Trocadero Theatre hosted by Pig Iron Theatre Company, Philadelphia's only dance-clown-theatre ensemble presents its annual cabaret-benefit-dance party.

For Immediate Release: December 1, 2005
Media Contact: Jerre Brisky, Pig Iron Theatre Company, 215.873.0883

On Thursday January 19, 2005, Pig Iron Theatre Company will unveil its most lefty, ethically and ethnically diverse cabaret fundraiser ever. In the midst of the frigid winter, Philly's hottest physical theatre company will celebrate Cuba and all things tropical with a star-studded lineup, including:

  • Pasion y Arte, the fierce Filadelfian all-female flamenco dance ensemble
  • The Pig Iron-meets-Bay of Pigs Movie
  • A kickline of singing, dancing Calypso ladies
  • Ecuadorian DJ Kik schooling us in Latin rhythms and playing the "cajon," plus Juicyflute the "oral surgeon" of beatbox
  • "The Bella Vista Social Club," in which two clowns from Philly travel to Cuba and unwittingly find themselves in Customs Hell!
  • And - of course - our very own Miss Martha Graham Cracker, the tallest, sweetest-sounding drag queen in the world, singing her bilingual lovesongs to Che Guevara

PLUS!

  • Catherine Cabeen from the Martha Graham Dance Company, performing the most breathtaking solo ever made, "Lamentation" (and who knows what might happen when Martha Graham encounters Martha Graham Cracker?!)
  • Little sparrow Amy Pickard singing "The Pig Iron Song"
  • God's Pottery, the ultra-Christian virgin choirboy duo
  • Slava, the bionic Swedish theatre company that can run through the snow for hours while singing
  • A short live episode from that 70's TV show "Taxi" as performed by Pig Iron
  • Lidia Kaminska, the Polish PhD in accordion and experienced Communist
  • The Bay of Pigs! Orchestra, with bandleader Victor "Wictor" Fiorillo
  • Your host Quinn "Lefty Loosey" Bauriedel

And of course the entire Pig Iron company will be performing for your pleasure.

That's not all! Who can forget the post-show dance party, DJ'ed by the inimitable thespian and spinner David Disbrow? Our silent auction will go all night with three big prizes that will be live-auctioned during the show by our host Quinn Bauriedel. And the Trocadero will provide a special drink for the occasion, the "Cuban Missile Crisis." It's guaranteed to make you wake up the next morning with something dangerous pointing at you.

All proceeds go to the non-profit Pig Iron Theatre Company, Philadelphia's rascally world-renowned theatre troupe, last seen at the Live Arts Festival with the enormous lab-spectacle PAY UP. Pig Iron combines the experimental, the whimsical, and the very good-looking for theatre that pushes your buttons and tickles your fancies. Hey, there's a reason The New York Times called us "one of the few groups successfully taking theater in new directions" and Philadelphia Magazine named us Best Theatre Company of 2005!

NOTE: Get your tickets early; last year For the Love of Pig Iron Pigs In Space! was a sold-out bonanza that broke attendance records and blew the collective minds of the assembled. This year's cabaret promises to be no different.

For the Love of Pig Iron: Bay of Pigs! will be held at the Trocadero Theatre, 1003 Arch Street, on Thursday, January 19th, 2006. Doors open at 7:00pm, show starts at 8:00pm. Tickets are a measly $20 in advance, $25 at the door. To purchase tickets or for additional information, please call 215-627-1883 or visit www.pigiron.org. 18+; children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
