Philadelphia Area Premiere of The Libertine at Action Arts Theater

Action Arts Theater Company, resident at the Cheltenham Center for the Arts, presents the Philadelphia Area Premiere of The Libertine by Stephen Jeffreys. The Libertine is based on the life of poet, pornographer, rake, and crown loyalist John Wilmot, Second Earl of Rochester. It was first presented in London at The Royal Court Theater in 1994; in 1996 it was produced in the United States by Steppenwolf Theater Company and starred John Malkovich.

Action Arts Theater Company will celebrate opening night by hosting a complimentary gourmet reception. After the opening night performance, on March 3rd, theatergoers are invited to enjoy a tantalizing array of hors d'oeuvres, drinks and desserts. The audience can share thoughts, questions, and reactions with the cast, crew, and director.

The Story: The play focuses on John Wilmot and his relationship with the King, his wife, his friends, and his mistress, or at least one of them. His life is a complicated whirlwind driven by his own genius, talents, his desires, and the web he weaves as he attempts to create the world around him. He is hampered or perhaps driven by his own vices - alcohol, women, pornography, and the truth as he sees it. Well educated and a noble he consorts with all types of people and is a respecter of none, especially himself.
