It's 1972, and a self-absorbed young actor arrives on a small farm to do research on a play about country life. Living with two middle-aged farmers, he stumbles upon the truth about their unusual past. Their lives are forever altered when art attempts to imitate life and the line between truth and fiction is crossed. What begins as an amusing portrayal of culture clash, slowly peels away layers of hidden secrets of love and tragedy. Winner of Canada's prestigious Dora Mavor Award, this powerful gem enjoyed it's American premiere at the famous Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, Illinois. TIME Magazine hailed "The Drawer Boy" as one of the Ten Best Plays of 2001, alongside the likes of "The Producers" and "Urinetown." While working as an actor near Toronto in 1995, author Michael Healey spent time with people in the community. He learned that it happened to be the same area where, in 1972, a local theater company came to interview farmers to produce what they called "The Farm Show." They lived with farmers, listened to their stories and filtered their findings into script and song. In the beginning it was performed simply: no lights, no set, a barn for a theater and hay bales for seats. It later toured in art centers across Canada, and afterward came film, TV and radio versions. Healey took his already existing idea of a story about two isolated bachelor farmers and merged it with what he had learned about this important event in Canadian theater history. Discovering this great narrative device culminated in a remarkable piece of theater. When asked what he would like the audience to take away from the show Healey said, "I wrote the play to explain why I love the theater. I think it's always good to be reminded what tangible use a piece of art can be in people's lives." "The Drawer Boy" is a humorous, heartwarming story about friendship and remembrance. Montgomery Theater's production of "The Drawer Boy" is sponsored by Harleysville National Bank. Box office opens 20 minutes before show. For more information and reservations call 215-723-9984.
