Ten Years in Exile - New Staff and Old Friends Come Together for a One Night Only Celebration

For Immediate Release: July 20, 2006
Media Contact: Bryan S. Clark, Theatre Exile, 215.922.4462

After ten years of cutting edge productions, career defining performances and innovative designs, Theatre Exile will celebrate its roots and prepare for its future this summer. Joined by new staff, Theater Exile prepares for a one night only return of our own smash hit, THE PHILLY FAN, as part of a fundraising celebration.

Theatre Exile welcomes new Co-Artistic Director, Deborah Block. Deborah was one of the founding organizers and the program director for nine years for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, now called the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe. Her efforts brought in exciting and experimental productions from all over the country to the city of Philadelphia. Primarily a director and dramaturge, she has been involved in the creation of over 50 professional productions with an emphasis on new plays and movement based theater. Her professional work has been seen in Philadelphia, New York and Alaska.

Theatre Exile also is pleased to introduce our new Managing Director, Bryan Clark. Having served the Philadelphia theater community for three years as a judge and nominator for the Barrymore Awards for Excellence, Bryan has worked professionally in many aspects of theater including administration, production, marketing and is also a produced playwright. Before joining Exile, Bryan served as the Marketing Director and Education Director for the Academy Theater in New Jersey.

Artistic Director, Joe Canuso, says "We are excited that, entering our tenth season, we have enhanced our operations administratively, as we continue to explore newer and bolder means of expression artistically." Armed with new staff, Theatre Exile has already begun to prepare for our tenth season by bringing back our most successful show ever!

For one night only, Wednesday, August 9th, Theatre Exile is proud to bring back THE PHILLY FAN. To help prepare for our future and celebrate our past, Theatre Exile is planning an evening of fundraising and entertainment. The main event of our summer fundraiser will be a one night performance of critically acclaimed, perpetually sold-out, Philadelphia favorite, THE PHILLY FAN. Tom McCarthy returns as The Fan, the quintessential Philly sports fanatic who rallies with and rails against the none-too-successful sports teams of our city. Book ending the performance will be a reception with fine food and drink, as well as a silent auction. Party-goers will have the chance to bid on such unusual prizes as sports memorabilia, gym memberships, massages and even tickets to Philadelphia's favorite sports teams! Following the performance, Theater Exile will welcome local musicians as well as other special guests, to drink and be merry into the late hours. The performance will be on the mainstage of the Adrienne Theater at 2030 Sansom Street, starting at 8pm, with the celebration and auction in the lobby and Playground space of the Adrienne Theater starting at 6:30 pm.

Theatre Exile is a nonprofit theater company dedicated to enhancing the cultural experiences of all Philadelphians through the staging of works that engage the imagination. We produce risky and challenging plays that contain a sense of true Philadelphia "grit and passion". We are constantly striving to reach out to new theater audiences throughout the community by presenting both new works as well as established plays that are often reinterpreted in original ways and/or held in unique site specific locations.

We believe in freedom of expression; formulated through innovation, exploration and provocation. At the same time, we provide a safe and creative environment in which local artists can grow and experiment and ultimately, find their own voice.
