Storybook Musical Theatre, one of the Philadelphia area's premiere theater companies for family entertainment, will present its fifteenth anniversary season of musicals based on classic fairy tales and childrens' stories. The Abington, PA. based, non-profit, professional, Equity children's theatre's three-show season will be comprised of audience favorites based on stories from Charles Perrault, the Grimm Brothers, and Lewis Carroll.
In addition, Storybook has planned several special events to celebrate its 15th season, including the continuation of special auctions for prizes including select children's walk-on roles in one of its shows. In addition, a special celebration or fund-raising gala, still in the planning stage, will help celebrate Storybook's special milestone. This event will be held sometime in March, 2007 and will be family-oriented. Further information will be forthcoming.
Again this season, two of its productions will play at three different venues, giving an opportunity to families and groups from throughout the Philadelphia area to experience a show at a location closer to them.
"Cinderella," an original musical by Patricia Goldberg and Kevin Arruda, will kick off the season, playing first from November 28 to December 1 at the Klein Branch Theater, 10100 Jamison Av. in Northeast Philadelphia. The show then transfers for a holiday season run to the Mitchell Performing Arts Center in Bryn, Athyn, PA., (Huntingdon Valley), from December 18 to 30, and concludes at the Bluett Theater at St. Joseph's University, January 9 to 13, 2007. This beloved tale is about a much maligned girl, who has two selfish stepsisters, a mean stepmother and nothing to wear to the ball. What's she to do to meet her prince? Get help from a fairy godmother, of course. This Charles Perrault famous tale comes to life in one of Storybook's most popular productions, complete with a pumpkin couch, a glass slipper and, of course, a handsome prince.
The second offering will tell the tale of a spoiled princess, who must guess the name of a strange, little man. "Rumpelstiltskin," an original musical based on the Grimm Brothers' tale, will be presented February 28 to March 11, 2007, at the Mitchell Performing Arts Center in Bryn Athyn, PA. The book is by Don Kersey with music by Steve Liebman. The story follows a princess who is forced into a very strange predicament and encounters a very peculiar man, who happens to have the unusual talent of being able to spin straw into gold and the surprising payment he asks for in return.
"Alice in Wonderland," based on the Lewis Carroll story, will be the final offering of the season. One of Storybook's favorite shows, it tells of the adventures of Alice once she steps through the looking glass and encounters some very strange characters including; the White Rabbit, Caterpillar, Mad Hatter, sleepy Dormouse, Knave, and not so friendly Queen of Hearts. This musical adaptation is by the writing team of Patricia Goldberg and Jeff Reim. It will first play the Klein Branch Theater from April 16 to 28. It then transfers to St. Joseph University's Bluett Theater for a run May 19 to 25. The show will conclude with a summer engagement at the Mitchell Performing Arts Center from July 10 to 21, 2007.
Individual tickets are $10.00 for children and $12.00 for adults. School and group discounts of up to 30% are available, as is a reduced rate, 3-show subscription plan. Show times vary with each production. All Storybook shows are appropriate for ages 3 and older and everyone gets to meet the cast for a handshake, photo or autograph, after every performance.
