SPRING AWAKENING is a story of developing bodies, raging emotions, friendships that last forever and love worth dying for. The play follows a group of 14-year-olds as they grapple with their sexuality in Victorian Europe. Written in 1891, this cutting-edge classic launched the avant-garde and was not performed without censorship for nearly a century. The new musical adaptation is currently running on Broadway to sold-out houses.
EgoPo's lush, expansive production is filled with "blazing imagination" -PBS, New Orleans. Eleven actors have trained with EgoPo for four months to execute this elaborate and physically demanding production. Comically grotesque masks have been designed for SPRING AWAKENING to capture the adult world bent on crushing adolescent discovery.
In September 2005, while performing the Maids X 2 in The Philadelphia Fringe, EgoPo Productions' theater was lost in Hurricane Katrina and most company members lost their homes. After 15 years of nationally acclaimed work, EgoPo left a destroyed theatre in New Orleans to become a part of the thriving Philadelphia theatre community. SPRING AWAKENING will be EgoPo's much-anticipated debut as a Philadelphia-based theater company.
The award-winning EgoPo has been creating groundbreaking theater in New Orleans, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Europe, and Asia for 14 years. The New York Times labeled their work "blissful and terrifying"; The S.F. Chronicle called EgoPo "the most exciting company in the city." EgoPo's awards include two Big Easy nominations, five Storer Boone nominations, one Ambie Award, nine Marquee nominations and Backstage's "Best Production of 2000".
