"Never open your mouth if you don't know the shot" ... Theatre Exile Presents Glengarry Glen Ross By David Mamet April 20 - May 13, 2007 Christ At Church Neighborhood House For Immediate Release: March 12, 2007
Theatre Exile invites you to step outside the world of "clock watchers, bureaucrats and officeholders" with David Mamet's Pulitzer Prize-winning GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS. Directed by Associate Artistic Director Matt Pfeiffer, GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS runs April 20th through May 13th at Christ Church Neighborhood House. The third and final show in Theatre Exile's 10th anniversary season, GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS explores the seamy underbelly of cutthroat real estate deals and corporate desperation from the back office to the booths of a lowbrow Chinese restaurant. Theatre Exile's all-star cast of Philadelphia actors brings Mamet's ferocious characters to startling life with Exile's trademark fierceness. GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS is a play about "the stark, dead end of the American dream...and the fact that it's all so funny speaks volumes about the American psyche" - New York Times. Theatre Exile is known for its smartly acted and directed productions of challenging and alternative plays that explore the gritty side of life. "With GLENGARRY," explains Producing Artistic Director Joe Canuso, "we're doing it again, but this time through a daring American classic." Producing the play in the already gritty environs of Christ Church Neighborhood House grounds GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS in an authentic, existent world, rather than striving to create an artificial theatrical reality of slick office furniture. "In Christ Church, you could image that these men are holed up in this building, that there's no outside reality," says Canuso. "It feels like Beckett in that way." Theatre Exile's Associate Artistic Director, Matt Pfeiffer, directs GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS. Pfeiffer is intrigued by Mamet's investigation into "what happens when you no longer have an investment in humanity and are only invested in the bottom line. It's undoubtedly a world of masculine energy, but it's an asexual masculinity - there's a deadness to the landscape." At the same time, Pfeiffer notes, it's a seductive world: "You're risking your life entering the world of this play, but there's something delicious and inviting about that danger. You feel like you need to take a shower after spending time with these characters, but they're so charismatic that you can't resist." Pfeiffer was last seen as Matt in Theatre Exile's RED LIGHT WINTER. Other Exile credits include an appearance in BURKIE and directing ROUNDING THIRD. Pfeiffer received a Barrymore Nomination for Best Direction of a Play for THE FOOCY (Lantern Theatre Company). With GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, Theatre Exile continues its mission to produce risky and challenging plays. The past two seasons have been periods of exciting growth for Theatre Exile. Last spring's KILLER JOE earned seven Barrymore Award nominations and took home two awards, for Best Ensemble in a Play and Best Supporting Actress (Amanda Schoonover). KILLER JOE was followed up by the success of RED LIGHT WINTER, which earned Theatre Exile the reputation of "the go-to company for sexy, fierce theatre" (Philadelphia Inquirer). Most recently, Theatre Exile participated in the inaugural Philadelphia New Play Festival, combining five works by three playwrights in PHILLY ORIGINALS: HEARTS & SOLES. David Mamet is a playwright, director and novelist. Born in Flossmoor, Illinois in 1947, Mamet made his name with SEXUAL PERVERSITY IN CHICAGO (1974), THE DUCK VARIATIONS (1976), and AMERICAN BUFFALO (1977). He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 for GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, which was later made into a film version using his own script. Commended for its biting, realistic dialogue, GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS was inspired by the time Mamet spent working in a real estate office. Other plays include SPEED-THE-PLOUGH (1988), OLEANNA (1992) and BOSTON MARRIAGE (2005). Mamet made his screenwriting debut with THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE (1981) and won Academy Award nominations for THE VERDICT (1982) and WAG THE DOG (1997). Other film credits as screenwriter/director include HOUSE OF GAMES, THE SPANISH PRISONER and HEIST. Mamet is the author of WRITING IN RESTAURANTS. Other recent books include THE OLD RELIGION (1997), a novel about the lynching of Leo Frank, THE WICKED SON (2006), a study of Jewish self-hatred and anti-Semitism and BAMBI v. GODZILLA, an acerbic commentary on the movie business. Theatre Exile favorite Harry Philibosian returns as old-school salesman Shelly Levene. Philibosian was last seen in Theatre Exile's HEARTS & SOLES. Other Exile credits include THE FRANKENHARRY PLAYS, BELMONT AVENUE SOCIAL CLUB, LIVE AT THE APOLLO DINER, BURKIE and THE GIN GAME. Film work includes 12 MONKEYS, THE GOOD THIEF and THE AGE OF INNOCENCE. Television appearances include HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREETS, HACK, and the Emmy Award-winning TURTLESTONE (PBS). William Zielinski plays top salesman Roma. A 15 year veteran of the Philadelphia stage and 5-time Barrymore Award nominee, Zielinski's recent work includes TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD (Virginia Stage Company), LOST IN YONKERS (Walnut Street Theatre), WINESBURG, OHIO (Arden Theatre Company), and the national tour of TRUMBO with Brian Dennehy. He was a member of the Barrymore Award-winning ensembles of THE LARAMIE PROJECT (Philadelphia Theatre Company) and THE COMEDY OF ERRORS (Lantern Theatre Company). The founder of Theater Exile, Canuso has directed critically acclaimed productions of FULL FIGURED, LOVES TO DANCE, RED LIGHT WINTER, THE PHIILY FAN, VALPARAISO, BELMONT AVENUE SOCIAL CLUB as well last season's smash hit, KILLER JOE, which earned Theatre Exile seven Barrymore nominations (the most nominations for a non-musical), including Outstanding Overall Production and Outstanding Direction of a Play. He has acted in Theatre Exile's production of THE DREAMER EXAMAINES HIS PILLOW, PARKING, ROCKETMAN and PRINCESS IVONA. Dan Hodge makes his Philadelphia debut as Williamson.
