People's Light & Theatre Company Presents: Six Characters In Search Of An Author October 10 - November 4, 2007 Luigi Pirandello's Master Work Is Staged in this Brand New Translation/Adaptation by Louis Lippa For Immediate Release: September 17, 2007
People's Light & Theatre Company presents the World Premiere of a new adaptation of SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR, the master work by Nobel Prize-winning playwright Luigi Pirandello, from October 10 - November 4, 2007, on the Steinbright Stage. Long-time company member Louis Lippa adapts this classic, Ken Marini directs. People's Light & Theatre is located at 39 Conestoga Road, Malvern. For tickets call 610-644-3500 or visit www.peopleslight.org. Carrabba's Italian Grill is the show's corporate sponsor. SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR is the most popular of Pirandello's plays. In the play, audiences are confronted with the unexpected arrival of six fictional play characters that have been abandoned by their author. They interrupt and invade the rehearsal of another play and demand that the author not only finish their story, but in a way that they would like it to be told. The play asks probing questions about the nature of reality versus illusion, truth versus artifice and the workings of the creative process. Translator and adaptor Louis Lippa is fluent in the Italian language. This is the third Pirandello piece that he has worked on, either as a director or as an adaptor. His first, Have It Your Way, was produced by People's Light in 1997. Lippa says, "I became interested in the work of Pirandello when I directed it for the first time. I then realized how much tragedy and comedy exist at the same time in his work. If the comedy is not present, then the tragedy is not as potent. Six Characters is one of my favorites because the idea - that six characters abandoned by their author seek another author to end their story - is so original." He adds, "Many translations of Pirandello miss the humor in his work. When I read Pirandello in Italian, I understand that a lot of the 'philosophical talk' is in the context of comedy. The philosophical speak is not only to spout ideas, but to accomplish a dramatic goal. I certainly haven't read all of the translations that are available, but I believe this one is probably more free and humorous than the others." SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR previews on Wednesday, October 10th and Thursday, October 11th at 7:30pm. The show opens on October 12th at 8pm and runs through November 4, 2007. Tickets are now on sale and range in price from $29 - $48 with special discounts available for groups of 10 or more, seniors and students. Audiences are encouraged to join the artists after each Thursday evening performance to discuss the production. Subscriptions to the 2007/2008 Season are still available at a significant savings. KEY BIOS Luigi Pirandello (Author) was born to wealthy parents in 1867 on the island of Sicily. As a young child he expressed an interest in literature and academics. He began his studies at the University of Rome in 1887, but eventually completed his thesis at the University of Bonn in Bonn, Germany. When he was a young man his family arranged his marriage to a young woman he had never met. The couple settled in Rome, where Pirandello established himself as a professor at a local teacher's college for women, a position he would maintain through the 1920s. His first success as a writer came in 1904 with the publication of his novel, The Late Mattia Pascal. He continued to focus on writing novels and did not begin to write plays until 1916. His theatrical successes include Right You Are - If You Think You Are (1916), Six Characters in Search of an Author (1921), Henry IV (1922), Naked (1922), Each in His Own Way (1924), Tonight We Improvise (1930) and As You Desire Me (1930). In the mid 1920s Pirandello opened the Art Theatre of Rome where he produced Italian and foreign plays of significance and featured some of the most respected actors in Italy. Pirandello received support for his theatre from Benito Mussolini, who had expressed admiration for the playwright. In 1932 Pirandello was able to bring his work to the screen with an adaptation of As You Desire Me, starring Greta Garbo. He was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1934.
