Story Time for Grown-Ups! InterAct Theatre Company's Writing Aloud Continues With Comings and Goings For Immediate Release: March 31, 2008
On Monday, April 28 at 7:00 p.m., InterAct Theatre Company's ninth season of Writing Aloud concludes with Comings and Goings, an evening of four thoughtful stories about taking off, setting forth, and departing, as well as returning, revisiting, and arriving-and everything that happens in between. ABOUT Comings and Goings Presented on Monday, April 28, Comings and Goings features four remarkable stories about homecomings and leave-takings. Whether you're returning to a place where you used to reside or leaving the home you've known your whole life, the real story is in the reasons for moving and in the journey. These four writers describe four very different journeys with striking pathos, sensitivity, and care. Comings and Goings is the fifth program in the 2007-2008 season of InterAct Theatre Company's award-winning series Writing Aloud, featuring works by contemporary writers read aloud by Philadelphia's best actors. Tickets for the performance, held at 7:00 p.m. on the mainstage at The Adrienne, 2030 Sansom Street, are $15.00 for general admission or $10.00 for InterAct subscribers. Seating is limited, so advance reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 215-568-8079. Discount subscriptions and group rates are also available. The April 28 Writing Aloud opens with "Return to Ithaca," written by Christine Flanagan (of Haddonfield, NJ) and read by Dan Kern depicts the late night drives of mounting isolation of recovering alcoholic and disaffected businessman, Walt, as his estrangement from his family and former self grows. "Mere Pennies," written by Nancy Cathers Demme (of Hightstown, NJ) and read by Bev Appleton introduces us to Esther Kapanik, who goes to funerals for the free food, and follows her brief relationship with Horace, who falls for her chutzpah but balks at her exploitation of the dead. "How to Make Flan," written by Amina Gautier (of Philadelphia, PA) and read by Anjoli Santiago, follows a Latina college student on her journey home to tend to her sick grandmother and her estranged parents. Finally, "The Way In," written by Patrick Madden (of Erdenheim, PA) and read by Philadelphia favorite Tom McCarthy, follows an elderly father taking his mentally disabled son on a day trip to Old City, Philadelphia, charting the intricacies of their loving and very complicated relationship. ABOUT THE WRITING ALOUD PROGRAM Founded by David Sanders, Writing Aloud was established in 1999 to present diverse voices in contemporary fiction by the region's best writers, read on stage by professional actors. Quickly establishing itself as the region's premiere reading series, Writing Aloud has attracted sold-out audiences, has been featured in special broadcasts on WHYY-FM public radio, and is a recipient of Philadelphia Magazine's 2001 "Best of Philly" award. This season, Rebecca Wright takes over the directorship with hopes to spend the coming season building upon the program's strengths and taking a fresh look at how it can be even better.
