Media Theatre has a Souvenir for Broad Street - Acclaimed production at Wilma Theater June 17-29

For Immediate Release: May 15, 2008
Media Contact: Roger Ricker, The Media Theatre, 610.891.0100

The Media Theatre will have a presence on Broad Street in the center of Philadelphia for two weeks in June, as its acclaimed production of "Souvenir" plays the Wilma Theater.

"Souvenir" is a play with music based on the story of Florence Foster Jenkins, the Manhattan socialite who aspired to become an opera singer. Unfortunately, she had no musicality. It was due to her lack of ability, talent, and her naivete that she became a legend. In 1944 she sold out Carnegie Hall due to her legendary status. Stephen Temperley's script focuses on the working relationship she had with her accompanist, Cosme McMoon.

Tony nominated actress Ann Crumb will reprise her role as Florence Foster Jenkins. She received rave reviews during the show's Media run from the Philadelphia Inquirer, City Paper, and several Delaware County media outlets. Ms. Crumb is known to Philadelphia audiences having appeared on the Wilma Theater stage previously, as well as productions at The Prince, Walnut Street, and Forrest Theaters. Her Tony nomination for "Anna Karenina" solidified her own legendary status as one of Broadway's finest actresses. She also had a triumph in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Aspects of Love". She has starred in "The Goodbye Girl", "Chess", and "Nine". A Barrymore Award winner, she was nominated for the Broadway National Theater Award for Best Actress.

At the Wilma, Larry Daggett will play the role of Cosme McMoon. Larry Daggett, most recently of The Media Theatre's production of "The Full Monty", will portray the somewhat reluctant accompanist to Jenkins' lack of self-awareness in the revival of Director Jesse Cline's production of "Souvenir". Daggett, a member of the original cast of Broadway's "Ragtime", has performed at the Actors Theatre of Louisville, Fulton Opera House, Goodspeed, North Shore Music Theatre, and the Pittsburgh Public Theatre.

Cline, the Artistic Director for The Media Theatre since it opened its doors as a professional music theatre in 1994, looks forward to the move to Broad Street. "I believe our production deserves to be seen by as big an audience as possible. Moving it downtown helps to do that. It's a beautiful little piece, which speaks to music in a unique way. It's really about what each of us hears. Ann Crumb gives a memorable performance, and the move to the Wilma gives audiences in and around Center City an opportunity to enjoy what is one of the highlights of this theatre season. It will allow audiences to see some of the work we do on State Street in Media."
