UR_what_USeek: Brat Productions to present world premiere of USER 927 June 6-22 @ St. Stephen's Theater 10th & Ludlow, Phila PA Tix, showtimes & more info: www.bratproductions.org For Immediate Release: May 23, 2008
On June 6th, 2008 Brat Productions, Philadelphia's premiere avant-garde theatre, will launch the world premiere of USER 927, a new media thriller by Katharine Clark Gray. Directed by Producing Artistic Director Michael Alltop, USER 927 combines live performance with dual-projection video to take a provocative look at cyberstalking, search engines and the way information is obtained, manipulated and disseminated in our wired world. Leah Letts is ready for a change. In response to an unnamed traumatic event, the media-savvy Brooklynite impulsively moves herself and her 14-year-old daughter Deena to the tiny town of Osterville, Indiana. Trapped in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of summer, Deena turns to the Internet for companionship-- until Leah's protectiveness takes the reins. For this summer, at least, they are going to "go analog". But Deena and her online seekers-in-arms have other ideas. Framed by the true events of America Online's leak of 658,000 user search logs to the public-- and the subsequent uproar over one deviant user-- USER 927 takes a provocative look at the nature of search in the Internet era, and the dangers that seem to spring from every click of the mouse. We have seemingly limitless information at our fingertips, yet what do we really know? Performing at the Studio @ St. Stephen's Theater (10th & Ludlow Sts., Philadelphia), USER 927 examines our simultaneous attraction to, and dread of, modern technology, offering audiences the chance to see an important public debate take a thrilling new direction. Founded in 1996, Brat's mission is to create a new, younger generation of theatre-goers by creating theatre that breaks the rules; theatre that tests conventions; theatre that rocks. Since its inception, Brat has dedicated itself to developing both contemporary material and re-envisioned classics, working with new artists, multiple disciplines and, non-traditional venues. Brat believes, above all, in THEATRE FOR EVERYONE.
