Plays & Players Kicks off 2008-2009 Season with The Shape of Things - Acclaimed and highly debated writer Neil Labute's provocative play is helmed by Philadelphia director Carol Laratonda For Immediate Release: July 24, 2008
Plays & Players proudly presents "The Shape of Things" by acclaimed and highly debated playwright Neil Labute. "The Shape of Things" is a fast moving and thrilling piece of theatre set on a college campus in small-town America. It's a play about relationships, art and friendship where nothing is quite what it seems. How far would you go for love? For art? Insecure security guard Adam (Ken Sandberg) falls madly in love with art student Evelyn (Jacqueline Holloway), but in a series of twists and turns, Evelyn brings about quite a change in Adam. It's a change that affects his friends Phillip (Scott Franco) and Jenny (Molly Casey) in ways they couldn't possibly imagine. This provocative play will be directed by up-and-coming director Carol Laratonda and designed by Plays & Players regular Lance Moore. Intimate, on stage seating will allow audience members to become part of the "art scene." As seating is limited, advanced purchases, or Plays & Players member reservations, are recommended. "The Shape of Things" has a limited engagement of only 6 performances: August 6, 7, 8 and 9 at 8:00pm and August 9 and 10 at 3:00pm. Tickets are $20 purchased online at www.PlaysAndPlayers.org or $25 at the door. Plays & Players Box Office is open 30 minutes prior to show time. Reservations can be made by calling (215) 735-0630, and are subject to door prices. Groups of 15 or more can receive a 10% discount on ticket prices. Due to adult themes and language, this show is recommended for mature audiences. Astounding critics and audiences alike, "The Shape of Things" premiered amidst a blaze of publicity at London's Almeida Theatre in May 2001, where it sold every ticket for each performance before transferring to New York. The piece was nominated for the 2001 London Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Play. It was also made into a feature film in 2003, which starred the original cast of the stage production: Paul Rudd, Rachel Weisz, Gretchen Mol and Fred Weller. Neil Labute is one of the most provocative playwrights and film makers in Hollywood. His most recent theatrical production, "reasons to be pretty" is an acclaimed comic drama, where America's obsession with physical beauty is brutally and exhilarating confronted headlong, and puts the final ferocious cap on a trilogy of plays that began with "The Shape of Things" and "Fat Pig". Other Theatrical credits include: "Bash: Latter-Day Plays", "The Distance From Here", "The Mercy Seat", "Autobahn", "This Is How It Goes", "Some Girl(s)", "Wrecks", "In a Dark House" and "The Break of Noon" (opening in 2009). Film credits (in addition to the movie version of many of his plays) include: "In The Company of Men," "Your Friends & Neighbors", "Nurse Betty", "Possession", "The Wicker Man", and the upcoming "Lakeview Terrace" (September 2008). Plays & Players, 1714 Delancey St., Philadelphia (between Spruce & Pine Streets) is the only nonprofit theatre for the community serving center city Philadelphia, and one of the oldest continuously operating in America. Plays & Players participates in the Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre, a program of the Theatre Alliance of Philadelphia.
