Angels in America at The Players Club of Swarthmore Theater

For Immediate Release: December 19, 2008
Media Contact: Kristy Chen, The Players Club of Swarthmore Theater, 610.328.4271

The Players Club of Swarthmore Theater brings Tony Kushner's masterpiece, Angels in America, to its Second Stage. Hailed as "the broadest, deepest, most searching American play of our time," this epic will be presented the first weekend in January as a staged reading. Audiences can see Part One: Millennium Approaches on Friday night; Part Two: Perestroika on Saturday night and both parts separated by a pot-luck supper on Sunday afternoon and evening.

Director Dave Ebersole (of Lansdowne) says, "a staged reading can mean many things, and when the piece is split up into 2 parts stretching almost three hours each, you have to make it visually interesting for an audience to digest. Some scenes the action will be fully realized, while others will only be hinted at. The idea is to keep the action moving while bringing the text forefront." The action will be complimented by original music by local musician, Mick Loro (of Brookhaven) and visceral lighting design by Players Club of Swarthmore regular Alan Stamford (of Swarthmore).

Portraying the Angel is local actress Lizzy Dalton-Negron (of Glenn Mills). Of the piece, she says, "The play's important and powerful themes continue to resonate. Kushner is a visionary who gives the audience hope in such hard emotional situations."

The play also features Steve Pollack (of Aldan), Mike Raimondo (of Lansdowne), Rhonda Goldstein (of Haverford) as well as Philadelphia talent Jay Ronca, Chris Cherkis, Jennifer Summerfield, and J. Edward Murray.

Angels in America runs January 2 (Millennium Approaches) & 3 (Perestroika) at 8:00 p.m. and January 4 (complete) at 2:00 p.m. - with a pot-luck supper between the two parts. Admission by donation; half the proceeds will benefit The Angels of Mercy HIV ministry of Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church. For information about Sunday's pot-luck, e-mail secondstage@pcstheater.org or call 610-328-4271.

Please note: this production is for adult audiences; it contains strong language and situations.
