PSF Announces Shakespeare Competition for High School Students

For Immediate Release: January 19, 2009
Media Contact: Lisa Higgins, Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, 610.282.WILL x4

$15,000 in scholarships to DeSales University Awarded
Adjudicated by theatre professionals on Saturday February 28th

Aspiring young actors have the opportunity to perform scenes and monologues in the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival's second annual Shakespeare Competition. Held at DeSales University on Saturday, February 28th, the competition is adjudicated by theatre professionals and awards partial DeSales University scholarships to winning participants.

High school students from any public, private, or home school are eligible to participate in the competition. Registration deadline is Friday, February 6 and costs $25 per student participant. Entry forms and guidelines are available online at www.PaShakespeare.org.

PSF's Education Director Erin Mullen says, "For young actors, it's a unique opportunity to have professionals evaluate and polish their work. The judges have as much fun as the students," she says. "Plus the learning experience students receive from watching their peers' performances is unmatched outside of a college classroom."

All of the judges have performed with the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, are members of Actors Equity Association, the union of professional stage actors, and are experienced teachers.

A test model of the competition last year featured 25 students from 7 schools, and a total of $15,000 in renewable DeSales University scholarships was awarded.

For information, contact Erin Mullen, Education Director, at 610.282.WILL, ext. 9, or e-mail psf@desales.edu.

The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival at DeSales University is a professional company in residence at DeSales University. PSF's upcoming summer season will feature Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra and A Midsummer Night's Dream in addition to the Tony Award-winning musical 1776, the comedy The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), a new adaptation of Cinderella, and The Green Show from June 3 through August 2.
