MEDIA THEATRE HAS A BUSY FEBRUARY WITH A HIT, 'HONK', & HOLLY

For Immediate Release: January 23, 2009
Media Contact: Roger Ricker, Media Theatre, 610.891.0100

The Media Theatre has a very busy line-up in February, filled with a singing boy band, ducklings, and fundraisers.

First up is the Philadelphia regional professional premiere of the musical comedy "Altar Boyz" which plays through February 15. "Altar Boyz" is a satirical look at a Christian boy band from Ohio, which takes a humorous look at the commercialization of religion and the entire boy band phenomenon. With band members named Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Juan (plus Abraham, the Jewish member), audiences are given a look at the Boyz during the final night of their Raise-The-Praise Tour. Song titles include "Girl, You Make Me Want To Wait" and "I'm A Catholic". "Altar Boyz" is now in its fourth year as a huge Off-Broadway hit and is the winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical. Tickets are $35-42.50.

The ducklings, geese, and other animals are portrayed by young actors ages 6 and up in "Honk", a pop musical based on Hans Christian Anderson's The Ugly Duckling. In "Honk" one of the farm's ducks sees her eggs hatch and doesn't realize the largest duckling is really not a duck at all, but a newly hatched swan. The farm's cat longs to eat the ducklings, and there are hens, geese, and frogs a-plenty in this delightful musical for ages 5 and up. Janet McWilliams, a Temple University Theatre major, will portray Ida. "Honk" plays Saturday mornings at 11am (Feb. 14, 21, and 28). Tickets are $10-12 for the hour long show.

Two fundraisers are also a part of the February schedule at The Media Theatre. The first one, The 13th Annual Gala, takes place on Saturday evening February 7. The Gala event includes two receptions, an awards ceremony, and a special one-night-only concert featuring professional performers and theatre students. This year's honorees include BenAri Jewelers, Fox Chase Bank, Comcast, The Rose Tree Media School District, and Broadway actor Andy Karl (who was in the original cast of "Altar Boyz" when it opened Off-Broadway). Tickets are $100 and include all aspects of the evening. The evening supports the mission of music theatre and education at The Media Theatre. Title sponsors for this year's Gala are The Larsen family of Media.

The second fundraising event, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Media Theatre, is the return of Bennett Dunn and friends who were in last season's popular hit "The Buddy Holly Story". From February 20-22, Bennett and his musician pals will recreate some of Buddy Holly's greatest hits in a special event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the plane crash which many refer to as The Day the Music Died. The concert fundraiser, "The Night The Music Lived", plays at 8pm Friday February 20, at 2pm and 8pm Saturday February 21, and at 3pm Sunday February 22. Tickets are $30 ($25 for students).
