CAMP MEDIA THEATRE'S GETTING 'FOOTLOOSE' THIS SUMMER

For Immediate Release: February 18, 2009
Media Contact: Roger Ricker, Media Theatre, 610.891.0100

Camp Media Theatre will become 'Footloose' this summer as its Teen Camp focuses on the popular musical. 'Footloose' will be the fourth Teen Camp production, following the success of 'West Side Story', Disney's 'High School Musical', and last summer's 'Grease'.

Artistic Director Jesse Cline oversees the Teen Camp and all of its directors and designers. "Our Teen Camp allows young people who have an interest in music theatre to work with professionals in Delaware County's only professional music theatre. Each night, for three weeks, the teens rehearse the production in this beautiful space. The show is then performed for four weeks for general audiences, allowing the young cast to actually be 'working' actors onstage," he explained.

"Each summer we find a musical title which relates directly to who these young actors are," Cline continued. "The musicals need to deal with situations they might be able to find themselves in at their age, such as this summer's upcoming 'Footloose'."

'Footloose' is based on the 1984 hit film which starred Kevin Bacon. The music is by Tom Snow (among others), the lyrics by Dean Pitchford (with additional lyrics by Kenny Loggins), and the book is by Pitchford and Walter Bobbie. Song titles include "Let's Hear It For the Boy", "Almost Paradise", and "Holding Out For A Hero". The musical has appeal to adults since the original soundtrack and many of the songs were #1 hits following the movie's release.

The plot line of 'Footloose' is relatively simple, but certainly never irrelevant, particularly to young people. It's the story of Ren, a young man from Chicago, who moves with his mother to a puritanical small town after his father abandons them. Once Ren gets settled in the town, he realizes dancing is forbidden. Eventually, Ren convinces the Reverend Moore to allow the high school youth to dance once again.

Media Theatre's 'Footloose' Teen Summer Camp begins rehearsal on Monday June 22 (all rehearsals are from 6-9pm). The performances begin cuttin' it loose July 16. To register for the 'Footloose' Teen Camp at Media Theatre, call 610-891-0100 or visit www.mediatheatre.org .

The Media Theatre will also continue to offer its esteemed Summer Day Camp June 22-August 28 for ages 6 and up. The Day Camp has five two-week sessions and focuses on campers writing their own scene material with Broadway songs added to the mix as well as choreography.
