Act II Playhouse chooses PFLAG Philadelphia as beneficiary organization for March 8 dress rehearsal of 'Iron Kisses'

For Immediate Release: February 23, 2009
Media Contact: Rosemarie DeLuca, Act II Playhouse, 215.431.7587

Act II Playhouse has chosen PFLAG Philadelphia as the beneficiary organization for its third show of the season, Iron Kisses by James Still. Directed by Act II Associate Artistic Director Harriet Power, Iron Kisses is a highly theatrical drama, in which a brother and sister play themselves and, at various times, both of their parents.

Act II will raise funds for the family support group by opening its final dress rehearsal to the public-on Sunday, March 8 at 2 p.m. Suggested donation at the door is $10, and all monies collected will be donated to the PFLAG Philadelphia, one of the oldest and largest chapters of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), a national organization headquartered in Washington, DC.

"All of us in PFLAG Philadelphia are very grateful to everyone at Act II Playhouse for their generosity in choosing to honor the work of our organization," says Myra Taksa, President of PFLAG Philadelphia. "We are an all-volunteer group, and Act II's donation will help in our three-prong mission of education, support and advocacy on behalf of the LGBT community and family members." For more information on PFLAG Philadelphia, visit their website at www.pflagphila.org.

Iron Kisses-in strikingly original fashion-tells the story of an American family: a son who made up for being gay by being perfect; a daughter who finds she can't help treating her own daughter the way her mother treated her; a mother who struggles to love her two children equally; and a father who marvels at what he and his wife couldn't quite see.

"When it came time to pick a beneficiary organization for Iron Kisses, we immediately knew that PFLAG was the perfect fit," said Bud Martin, Producing Artistic Director for Act II Playhouse. "This beautifully written play is the perfect springboard to discuss issues that affect family dynamics, including homosexuality. Theatre is a marvelous tool to help initiate dialogue and build acceptance." A talk-back will be held after the March 8 dress rehearsal - and after four scheduled performances of Iron Kisses.

Iron Kisses opens for previews on March 10 and stars Tony Braithwaite, in a rare dramatic turn as Billy, and Kathryn Petersen as his sister, Barbara, for whom Still originally wrote the role. Opening Night is March 13, and the show runs through April 5.
