Candy may be the traditional treat for costumed Halloween revelers – but The Players Club of Swarthmore Theater is offering something a little different. For the October 31st performance of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods, any patron dressed as a fairy tale character will get a $5 discount on the price of admission.

The storybook personalities in the audience will be watching their famous counterparts on stage – but not as we’re used to seeing them. Cinderella, Rapunzel (and their princes), Jack the Giant Killer, Little Red Riding Hood…they all follow their familiar storylines in act one. But act two takes a look at what happens after “happily ever after”. Then, things get darker, as the heroes and heroines go deeper into the forest.

Director Paul Kerrigan of Phoenixville and Music Director Michele Ferdinand of Norwood have been exploring Sondheim’s Woods with actor/singers from around the Delaware Valley: Joshua Schwartz of Lancaster; Kate Wright and Angela Dalecki of Wilmington, DE; Andrew Rychlak of Malvern; Tim Reilly of Plymouth Meeting; Josiah Donnell of Boothwyn; Steven Smith of Swarthmore; Rae Ann Iverson of Haddonfield, NJ; Bridget O’Donnell, Bridget Yingling and Katherine Lemon of Springfield; Cassandra Boland and Rebecca Diamond of Philadelphia; Sara Sprague of West Chester, and Karen Cook of Lansdowne.

Audience members looking for a deeper theatrical experience should plan to attend the November 1st matinée. Afterwards, anyone who wishes to stay behind for an informal chat with the director and members of the cast may participate in what’s known as a “talk back” session. Into the Woods runs October 22- 25, 29- 31 and November 1- 7. Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances are at 8pm and Sunday matinées are at 2pm. The Players Club of Swarthmore Theater is located minutes from the Blue Route and I-95 on Fairview Road, just off of Route 320 (Chester Road) in Swarthmore.
