Mission
The mission or inspirational task of the Theatre Department is to instill in students the value of intellectual honesty, spiritual search, and emotional truth necessary for the presentation of an icon to the world. The Theatre Department contributes to the special academic environment of the University by providing it with a context for aesthetic investigation and experience. In the liberal arts tradition of the development of the whole person, the cultural - through communal experiences that nurture the individuality of each member. In its teaching and in its theatre productions and showcases, indeed all its public presentations, the department offers diverse and imaginative expressions of differing images of reality. These images serve as an intellectual and aesthetic stimulus to the larger community of the University.

Artistic theatrical work in the context of a University allows an historical and intellectual emphasis absent from the theatre of our culture. Our commitment is to a theatre of ideas, visions, language and experience that stretches and opens awareness beyond materialism. Our departmental commitment is to the interaction of the academic/scholarly with the artistic/imaginative in a dynamic synergy; and to experience in living theatre, for developing the sensibilities and sense of students of participants alike. The academic theatre must challenge and enrich the aspirations of art and the art of theatre in America.
