Mission
The Wilma Theater exists to present theater as an art form, engaging artists and audiences in an adventure of aesthetic philosophical reflection of the complexities of contemporary life. We accomplish our mission by producing thoughtful, well-crafted, productions of intelligent, daring plays that represent a range of voices, viewpoints, and production styles.

Description
The Wilma Theater, a 501(c)(3) non-profit theater organization, was founded in 1973 as the Wilma Project to encourage theatrical productions of original material and the development of artists in the community. In 1979, Blanka and Jiri Zizka, natives of Czechoslovakia, forged a creative relationship with the Wilma Project as artists-in-residence. They gained swift acclaim for their bold, innovative productions and assumed artistic leadership of the organization, changing the name to The Wilma Theater. After 20 seasons of producing theater at various locations - mainly in a 100-seat converted garage on Samsom Street - the Wilma opened a new state-of-the-art 300-seat theater on The Avenue of the Arts in 1996. The Wilma has attracted national attention for its innovative staging, cutting-edge productions, and daring selection of new and under-produced work. A cornerstone of the Wilma's artistry is its ongoing relationship with exciting theatre artists, from award winning playwrights Tom Stoppard and Doug Wright to the emerging young writers in our commissioning program. Recent productions have been acclaimed in national publications including Time Magazine, Variety, and USA Today. The Wilma has merited 126 Barrymore nominations and 36 wins, more than any other theater in the region.
